Bring your nature-inspired ideas onto clay with 4+ hours of content and 25+ video lessons
“You have to be naturally talented to make good art.”
It’s easy to look at detailed, illustrated ceramics and assume the artist has always known how to draw, carve, or work with clay.
But creating this kind of work is really a combination of skills, observation, and practice.
You don’t need to be an experienced ceramicist or illustrator to get started. What helps most is having a clear process for building the form, planning the design, transferring your illustration, and adding the final surface details.
Inside Teeming with Life: Illustrating Nature onto Clay, I’ll walk you through the process I use to create my own illustrated ceramic pieces.
Hi, I'm Kyra!
I’m an artist from rural northeast Kansas. I grew up with a love of drawing and a curiosity about the inner workings of the natural world. I earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in drawing and painting from Washburn University in Topeka, where I developed an interest in combining illustration and ceramics. My work explores themes of flora and fauna, the importance of biodiversity, and the relationship between humans and the natural world.
I currently create artwork from my home studio while also managing a small hospitality business with my family. My work is exhibited nationally, online, and at local art fairs. I’m an active member of my town’s art council and am passionate about making art more accessible to rural communities.
Each ceramic piece I create is completely handmade, from the form to the carefully carved illustration on the surface, inviting the viewer to slow down and closely observe the environment that inspires me.

Imagine knowing what to do when you sit down with a piece of clay
Illustrating on clay can feel a little intimidating when you’re not sure where to begin.
Maybe you have an idea you’d like to create, but you’re unsure how to build the right form, transfer the design, choose a surface decoration technique, or make everything work together.
That’s what I want to help make simpler.
By the end of the course, you’ll have a process you can come back to when creating your own illustrated ceramics, from building the clay form and planning the design to adding color, linework, and carved details.
You’ll be able to experiment with different forms, illustrations, and techniques while developing work that feels more personal to you.
And hopefully, you’ll feel more comfortable trying new ideas and seeing where they take you 🏺🌿
